Almost two weeks had passed since Mace had dropped Sloane off at the Idaho Falls airport. He spent his time at the cabin clearing snow from his solar panels and the path to the river, which never froze over completely due to the warm springs that flowed into it. But he could no longer use the river as transport to the closest town. Now he would either walk, snowshoe or cross-country ski to get any provisions he needed.

Winters here at the cabin could be long and depressing if he didn’t keep his mind occupied. It was times like this when his mind drifted to the death of his wife. She didn’t deserve to be killed at such a young age. And the worst part was what he found out from her autopsy—the fact that she had been pregnant with his son at the time. A double blow to Mace.

His only companionship was his half-wolf-half-dog Moose, but even his dog seemed to be getting stir crazy. Cabin fever, Mace guessed. At this time of year Moose would take off into the wilderness for hours, coming back tired and hungry.

Now, this Tuesday morning, Mace was reading a classic novel and realized he needed to turn on his internet to check his messages. Maybe he would have a reason to leave the solitude of this place for a job.

He quickly downloaded a single message and then shut down his internet again. When he opened the message, he saw that it was from Sloane. His chest heaved with this revelation. Had something gone wrong with the investigation of the dead billionaire? No. Sloane needed him. Could he meet her here on Friday? Then there was a series of numbers, which corresponded to 39 Degrees North Latitude and 104 Degrees West Longitude. Although more precise than that. The last four numbers were the time: 1600. Four p.m. He didn’t need his GPS to know where this was. It was somewhere in the Denver area. He’d focus on the precise location once he got there.

He leaned back in his chair and glanced out the picture window at the snowy conditions out there. Mace needed a reason to leave, and now he had it. Now, where was that crazy half-breed of his? He’d need to track down Moose before he left. Bring him to his friend in town.

Mace calculated how long it would take for him to drive to the Denver area. He could wait until morning, he guessed. That would give him some time to batten down the hatches in his cabin. Luckily, he had a few propane tanks that heated his house enough to keep his pipes from freezing. But that heating source wouldn’t kick in unless his wood stove no longer heated the small cabin.

Later that evening, Moose showed up at his side door and whined for Mace to let him in. He noticed immediately that his dog had gotten into something he knew better than to mess with. He had a few porcupine quills sticking from his nose.
